Your website is one in a billion, find out why SEO is the key to having your business succeed online.

If you operate a business and have a website, you’ve most likely tried to grasp the concept of search engine optimization (SEO). Many people believe SEO is simply having the right keywords on their website so their page ranks higher in search engine results. Although keywords are an important part of SEO, they really only scratch the surface of what’s involved in having your website rank well. Here at Marwick Marketing we’ve poured blood, sweat and tears (well maybe not blood) into mastering the concept of SEO to help businesses get found on the internet. If you’ve been thinking about SEO lately, and are wondering what exactly it is and how it could benefit your business, then read on…

You are one in a billion

In 2015 the internet reached an enormous milestone. For the first time ever there were over one billion websites online. One billion is a really hard number to contextualize for many, but let’s try for a moment.

Think of your website as a star in space. As you know, the stars we see from earth are only the tiniest sliver of the stars that exist in our galaxy and beyond. Let’s compare the stars that are visible to the human eye with the websites that are found on an average search, and the first stars that appear at night as the coveted websites on the first page of Google. Most Google searches yield over one hundred thousand individual results; this is still only .0001 percent of the total websites that exist online. With less than 10 percent of people advancing to page two of Google according to Protofuse, as a business you’ll want to do everything in your power to the shiniest star on the search results page. If you want to land your website on the first page of Google, SEO is how you get there.

It is the science behind getting found online

If online marketing is the art of getting found online, then search engine optimization is the science. Search engine algorithms are comprised of a complex, and ever-changing computer formula that determines the relevance of a website to a particular web search. There are over 200 unique signals that formulate a search result’s relevance, with some of the most important factors being proper site structure, optimized content (including proper use of keywords), and proper promotion of your website through blogging, backlinks and social media.

Most importantly having a website that is simple and intuitive to navigate, and that provides useful and well presented information to your target market, will do wonders for your ranking. When people have a good experience on your website, they spend longer viewing pages, are more likely to return, and in some cases will perform desired actions such as make a purchase, fill out a form or call your business direct. Search engines recognize these positive behaviours on your website, and through their algorithms will rate your website more favourably based on these metrics.

A world of fingertips are awaiting

With over 40 percent of the world using the Internet, and $2.2 trillion of online retail sales recorded in 2015, it’s no wonder more businesses are understanding the importance of being found online. In Canada alone, 88.5 percent of the population are internet users and in 2017 it’s expected that internet advertising will surpass TV advertising for the first time. There has never been a more important time to have your website rank well on search engines and that’s why it’s essential to have an SEO specialist as part of your website team.
