A definition is simple, it’s an online community. You can use this community to either connect with people personally or in business. It’s exciting and developing very quickly. It is a must!

This article is so you have the basic knowledge to be able to go out there and use Social Media to its fullest potential. It takes time to learn, but the more you use it, the more powerful it can be.

What is Social Media for?

Now here is the exciting part. You can use it in so many ways you probably don’t realise the impact that it can have, especially in business.

You can use it to connect with people, advertise, sell, engage, lead generation, marketing campaigns, make money, reach a huge audience in an instance, buy and share stories, pictures and videos. You can market your products using business to business, educate people and learn. The options available to you when using these sites are absolutely outstanding.

What Social Media tools can I use?

The tools are quite varied. If you use Google to search for Social Media tools or sites you will find a whole bunch of them come up. Below I have given a small definition of the ones that are most common, but obviously you need to decide for yourself which ones you would like to use.

Like I said, use Google to explore your options. I will say though, the following four are a must! Get yourself a strategy so you will then get an idea of the type of tools you will need to use.

Facebook – Used for both personal and business use. On a personal level you can connect with new friends and reconnect with old. You can share videos, pictures opinions and ideas. On a business level you can create business pages and groups which you can gain enthusiasm and interest by advertising.

Twitter – Used for both personal and business use. On a personal basis you can connect with people you know and don’t know personally, or you can just follow them if you find them interesting. On a business level, like Facebook it’s a great tool for advertising, promoting and gaining interest in your business.

LinkedIn – This is used predominantly for business use and the working professional. It’s a way of marketing your products and services to other businesses. It’s a way of connecting with people in the same industry as you. Great way to network online!

YouTube – A place where you can find nearly anything. Used for personal and business use. It’s a huge video library where you can educate yourself and others on virtually anything you wish. You can watch music videos, or post your own videos. You can literally make a video about anything and post it on YouTube for all to see.

All are open 24 hours a day so you can update, chat, advertise and all the rest whenever suites you best!

There are many Social media tools to use, how much time will it take to update all of them?

Like I said, you will probably at some point be using various tools so there are a few options that you can look at so when you update one, it updates them all in some way.

It does take time out of your day when using and updating these sites, if you have the money, pay someone to do it all for you. If you don’t then a great tool is Hootsuit, but again, look on Google and see if there are any better platforms for you to upload the latest information all in one go.

When should I have a Social Media Strategy?

Using Social Media tools for business is a definite! Like any business venture you should always have a strategy. When using tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube you need to have direction if you want to achieve results.

Take for instance marketing online when using these tools. All your principles are the same as your previous marketing campaigns but when using Social Media you need to have a strategy on how you are going to use the tools that you choose. They all have their own uses, you need the strategy that works best for your business.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself are:

1. How can I target my customers and potential customers effectively?
2. How do they want to purchase their products or service?
3. What outcome do I want?
4. How do I keep my customers interest?
5. What are my customer’s needs?
6. What is my unique selling point and how can I advertise that in the space that the tools offer?
7. What does my campaign look like?

Can I employ someone to look after my Social Media?

Absolutely! If you can afford it then do it! It allows you to get on with creating and expanding your business ideas. Just like when employing someone to blog for you or write forum topics you can employ someone who has incredible knowledge in Social media marketing, strategy and campaigns to promote and advertise your business online.
